144 years strong!
As a proud Canadian I thought I would to a blog post celebrating Canadians in video games. Now I am not talking about producers, programmers, and such. Rather I have decided to hand pick a few prominent video game characters that hail from the Great White North! Read on to see who (or what) has made my list.
Sasquatch from Darkstalkers: The most noble of his tribe of Bigfoot that live deep in the Rocky Mountains of Canada. When he sensed the powers of the monster Pyron, he set out to find out what it was. After returning to his village, he finds members of his village have disappeared. In the center of his village was a huge hole. Determined that his fellow villagers have been pulled into trouble, Sasquatch jumped into the hole to help them. In the end, he found out that his fellow Bigfoot went willingly because Jedah offered them lots of bananas. [from Darkstalkopedia]
Wolf Hawkfield from Virtua Fighter Series: Wolf lived as a First Nations woodsman and hunter in the Canadian wilderness until he was discovered on a scouting trip by a professional wrestling promoter. A quiet man that loves nature, he has his gentle side despite his tough exterior and can be quite kind at heart. He is filled with fighting spirit however, and once provoked he is not satisfied until he finishes the job at hand. He was an instant star in the pro wrestling area, and successfully defended his title several times. Dissatisfied with the level of competition, however, he turned in his belt and retired from the ring. Hearing of the World tournament, he entered to seek worthy opponents. [from Virtua Fighter Wiki ]
The Wilderness of D2: D2, one of my favourite Dreamcast titles, take place in a wilderness location in Northern Canada. While not a character, I just like to have an opportunity to have D2 appear in my blog. Perhaps one day I should revisit this game and give it the full blogging treatment as well as to see how well it holds up a decade later.
Elise Riggs of the SSX Series: A blonde and beautiful Canadian, nothing about Elise is accidental: she chooses her look, her moods, her friends, and her enemies. She’s used to getting her way and will do whatever it takes to get what she wants. Elise likes the rough stuff in the heat of SSX competition, and hates losing. She has a sharp and deadly sense of humour and a laugh that will chill you to the bone. [from the SSX Wiki]
Wolverine from countless X-Men related games: Canada’s #1 Super-Hero son! The game X-Men Origins: Wolverine was a the game where Wolverine really took his place as a video game character. It is also a rare example of a licensed character or product made a smooth transition into the video game world. Everybody loves Wolverine, especially Canada!
In truth, there is of a lot of Canadian characters or locations that are featured in video games, that is especially more odd as Canada is a major player in game development. I would like to see a Canada-centric game or character make a splash. Now is the time! Happy Canada Day!
